Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an upcoming British drama fantasy action film directed by David Yates and written by J. K. Rowling (in her screenwriting debut), inspired by Rowling's book of the same name. It stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller, Ron Perlman, Jon Voight, and Johnny Depp.
A spin-off, the film will be the first installment of a series of five films. It is intended to be the ninth film installment (and the tenth overall installment, including the two-part stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) in J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World, a new entertainment brand and cinematic universe founded by Rowling and acquired by Warner Bros., showcasing different genres, and depicting different cultures, time periods, political conflicts, and wars in various Wizarding societies around the globe. Principal photography commenced on 17 August 2015, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled to be released worldwide on 18 November 2016 in the 3D, IMAX 4K Laser and other large format theatres.

Development

First announced in September 2013, the project marks Rowling's debut as a screenwriter.^[19] The film sees the return of producer David Heyman, as well as writer Steve Kloves, both veterans of the Potter film franchise.^[20] After Alfonso Cuarón declined involvement,^[21][22] Warner Bros. announced that David Yates would direct at least the first instalment of a planned trilogy.^[23] James Newton Howard was contracted to compose the score.^[24]

Pre-production

Eddie Redmayne was cast in the lead role of Newt Scamander, the Wizarding World's preeminent magizoologist, in June 2015.^[3] Matt Smith and Nicholas Hoult were also considered.^[25][26] Alison Sudol, in her feature film debut, and Katherine Waterston were subsequently chosen to play the witch sisters Queenie and Tina.^[4][7] Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell joined the cast as the wizards Credence and Graves,^[8][12] while comedian Dan Fogler was cast as Jacob, a non-magical person whom Newt befriends.^[11] Following thousands of auditions in an open casting call, ten-year-old Faith Wood-Blagrove was chosen for the part of Modesty.^[15] Jenn Murray signed on to star as Chastity,^[16] and Samantha Morton was cast as Mary Lou.^[9] Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Carmen Ejogo and Ron Perlman were cast in unnamed roles.^[13][14]
Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter series was desperate to star in the spin-off.^[27]

Filming

Principal photography on the film commenced on 17 August 2015, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden.^{[9][10][28][29]} Several scenes were also shot on location in London.^[30] After two months, the production moved to St George's Hall in Liverpool, which was transformed into 1920s New York.^[31] Filming concluded on 28 January 2016.^{[citation needed]}
Johnny Depp filmed some scenes at the studio for two days.^[18]

Music

On 9 April 2016, it was announced that James Newton Howard would write and compose the film's score.^[32] On 24 October, Pottermore published an official first look at the film's main theme composed by Howard.^[33] The main theme will incorporate John Williams' themes from earlier films. The soundtrack will be released by WaterTower Music on 18 November 2016.^[34]

Release

The film will be released on 18 November 2016, in 3D, in the UK and US, and the new IMAX 4K Laser system.^[3][35] It will premiere one day earlier in a number of other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Germany and Italy, on 17 November.

Promotion

WB Games is set to release a "story pack" based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for the video game Lego Dimensions. The pack will include a constructible model of MACUSA, figures of Newt Scamander and a Niffler, and a six-level game campaign that adapts the film's events. The pack is set to be released on the same day as the film, alongside a "fun pack" containing figures of Tina Goldstein and a Swooping Evil. The cast of the film reprises their roles in the game.

Marketing

On 4 November 2015, Entertainment Weekly released the first official publicity shots of the film, containing pictures of characters Newt, Tina, and Queenie, and production and filming being held in various sets designed to mirror 1920's New York City. On 10 December 2015, it was announced that an "announcement trailer" would be released five days later, on 15 December.^[36] Along with the one-minute trailer, a teaser poster was released.^[37][38]
During "A Celebration of Harry Potter" at Universal Orlando Resort in February 2016, a featurette was released showcasing several interviews with various cast and crew members, as well as the first official behind-the-scenes footage.
Rowling has also released four pieces of writing exclusively as an introduction to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, titled History of Magic in North America. It includes information about scourers, brutal and violent magical mercenaries who played a big role in the historic Salem witch trials of the 1600s, as well as info about various American wand makers, the role magic played in World War One, Native American magic, the foundation of MACUSA, the way No-Maj/Wizarding segregation was enforced brutally after a violent and terrifying breach of the international statute of secrecy and the institution of Rappaports Law, and life in 1920's Wizarding America, with info about Wand Permits and Prohibition.
On 10 April 2016, the first "teaser trailer" was released during the MTV Movie Awards.^[39]
On 26 April 2016, it was announced that the film's script will be released in the form of a book on November 19.^[40]
More visual publicity for the film was released at CineEurope and VidCon on 23 June. A new featurette entitled "A New Hero" was released later in the day, and a well received test screening was held in Chicago at the end of July, with viewers praising the complex plot line, the emotion, and the darkness at the heart of the story.
A third Art-Deco/German Expressionist-style poster was revealed at Comic-Con. Interactive wand stations have appeared at both VidCon and Comic-Con conventions. A new trailer for the film was unveiled at Warner Bros.' Comic-Con Hall H panel shortly after an interview with members of the cast. A quick-to-sell-out signing took place shortly thereafter.
Rowling released a second part to her History of Magic in North America series, entitled "Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," which details the founding of the preeminent American Wizarding academy and allows users to sort themselves into one of the four houses of the school. The school apparently has a very minor role in the film.
On 10 August, more information and publicity shots for the film were released through Entertainment Weekly, with new information on Ezra Miller's character Credence Barebone and the news that Zoe Kravitz would have a role in the series. New images released include the quartet running down a New York City alleyway, David Yates chatting to stars Katherine Waterston and Eddie Redmayne on the set in front of a blown out Subway station, Colin Farrell's character Percival Graves interrogating an arrested and handcuffed Newt, and Graves and Credence putting up anti-magic propaganda.
Beginning in the month of September, more news was released on the various tie-in books being released for the film. On 28 September, the final trailer for the film officially premiered via EllenTube, quickly becoming the most viewed film trailer of the year to date. Not long after, an announcement was made that a global fan event would be held in London and Los Angeles, as well as a number of other cities worldwide, on 13 October. A live Q&A was held and more new footage from the film was revealed. Visitors were treated to the first seven minutes of the film and were also invited to stay for the first film of the Harry Potter franchise in IMAX, the start of a marketing push that saw all 8 films return to IMAX theaters internationally for one week leading up to the release of Fantastic Beasts. Due to demand, the fan event was expanded to a number of other US and international locations.

Rock On II

Rock On II (also known as Rock On 2) is an upcoming 2016 Indian Hindi musical drama film directed by Shujaat Saudagar, produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, and with music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. It stars Shraddha Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Shashank Arora, and Prachi Desai in lead roles.^[1]
Rock On II is a sequel to the 2008 film, Rock On!!, and is scheduled to release on 11 November 2016

Development

After the release of the first film, a sequel was planned to be made. However, a follow-up went through prolonged development hell for almost eight years. According to Arjun this was because "it was important to figure out the story."^[4] The idea of the sequel was to have the same characters but explore where they are now after eight years.^[4] Pubali Chaudhuri spent three years writing the script.^[5] During the development phase, the film was initially intended to take place in Himachal Pradesh. But following the attacks of a Manipuri students in Delhi, the producers decided to alter the film's setting. Saudagar was watching the incident on news when Farhan pinged him up where the two discussed on the issue. Neither him or Farhan had been to the North East before but Purab who had visited many places there suggested Meghalaya and Shillong, as Shillong is also called the “rock capital.” Initially, the decision was met with some resistance. Saudagar says that the main intent was to bring the North East to Hindi cinema and also highlights the issue people in the state faces.^[5]

Pre-production

"I wanted to do a film in the North-East. There are North-Eastern students in various parts of India being beaten up and called outsiders. This film is a small attempt to bring the region into popular culture. I’m glad we shot in Shillong. Every person felt a sense of loss when we finished shooting. We'd all love to go back.

In 2011, Shujaat Saudagar received a call from producer Ritesh Sidhwani who wanted him to be a second unit director in Don 2 (2011). Ever since then the two kept in touch with each other. Then in 2013, Ritesh once again approached him to see if he would be interested in helming a sequel to Rock On!! as a lead director to which he agreed.^[5] Saudagar admits that he is not in favor of sequels, but grew interested in this one after reading the coherent script.^[5]
Producer Farhan Akhtar had always wanted to make a film in Northeast India and says the film is a tribute to the people of the North-East and an attempt to bring the whole region into mainstream pop culture.^[6]

Casting

Aside from newcomers Shraddha Kapoor and Shashank Arora, the principal cast from the original film all returned for the sequel. The only member from the film's band Magik who did not return for the follow-up was Luky Kenny as his character died in the first film, while Arjun Rampal, Farhan Khan and Purab Kohli all reprised their respective roles making it a rare occurrence in Bollywood. The only other Bollywood sequel to have the three leads return for a sequel was Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2.^[7] After Rampal won National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 56th National Film Awards in 2008 for his role in Rock On!!, he rejected all offers thereafter to play a lead role as a musician.^[8]

There were offers to play the role of a musician but I did not want to do it. I did not want to do it (musician role) because I had done it (with Rock On) beyond my expectations. I had surpassed the expectations. There was always talk about Rock On 2, so I wanted to preserve it.^[8]

Kapoor, an ardent fan of the original film undertook vocal training for her role.

Shraddha Kapoor plays Jiah, an aspiring singer. Kapoor is an ardent fan of the original film and cites the recurring theme of music band and friendship [in the first film] as her prime reason wanting to star in the sequel. After watching the movie in theater, she told her father that if there be made a sequel, she would be in it.^[9] When she first heard that the filmmakers were making sequel, she called up producer Ritesh Sidhwani if she could be considered for a part. She met Sidhwani and the production team who mainly wanted to hear her sing.^[9] She gave a singing audition to the film's composer Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.^[10] Although Kapoor had sung before in her previous films, this marks the first time that the singer-actress sings rock songs.^[11] Whilst growing up, she took training in classical music from her nana, Pandharinath Kolhapure, but had to cease training after her nana passed away for which she says she regret. For the film, Shradha undertook vocal training with Samantha Edwards, a jazz vocalist, in order to adapt the rock genre correctly.^[12] Her biggest inspiration as a singer are her grandmother Lata Mangeshkarji and her mother Shivangi Kapoor, née Kolhapure.^[12] She said that part of what inspired her to star in the film was watching Farhan Akhtar in the original film write his own songs and perform them.^[12] Arjun Rampal was a little skeptic and grew wary when he first heard about Kapoor's involvement in the film since "she is from a different generation". But, upon hearing her vocals, it instead provided him inspiration.^[4]
Shraddha says she and her character, Jiah shares little resemblance. While she had a sheltered upbringing and would always travel with companies, Jiah on the other hand, is a loner and reclusive character who chooses to remain aloof and would rather live and travel alone. Director Saudagar would make her undergo a training process in which she spent as much time alone as possible with herself in order for her to connect to her character. Travelling to Shillong was in a way helpful for this process as she was away from her family. In some instances, she would put up "do not disturb" sign on the door.

I live with my family, so this meant that no one could knock on my door and come in while the sign was up. I needed to do this because Jiah is very aloof. She taught me to be alone. Jiah just packs her bags and takes off. I feel that I’ve learned how to be by myself, just reading a book or listening to music. I think that's important.^[9]

The film also marks the third time that Farhan plays a father in a feature film after Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014) and in Wazir (2016).^[6]

Principal photography

The film was extensively shot in and around the city of Shillong (pictured) unofficially called "the rock capital of India."

Principal photography began in Shillong, Meghalaya on October 6, 2015 and the film was shot in numeours other locations in the eastern part of the state, including Umniuh Village in Ri-Bhoi district, Cherrapunjee and Laitlum.^[13] Prior to filming, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Excel Entertainment and the Government of Meghalaya in July 2015.^[14] Since the script demanded picturesque locations with lots of mountains, Ritesh Sidhwani chose Shillong its adjacent places in the state of Meghalaya to be the ideal locations. Sidhwani visited the state in February 2016 for scouting filming locations.^[15] In an interview with The Northeast Today, Akhtar stated that Shillong was the natural choice because of its close history with music. "We all know that Shillong has a huge history with rock music and it was an obvious choice for the movie" he stated.^[16] The film was initially set to take place in Himachal Pradesh.^[5] By August 2015, the whole cast and crew had arrived in the city to begin production. Farhan mingled with the people in the villages in order to understand their way of life.^[14]
In October 2015, Kapoor flew to Mumbai after an internal injury in her eye – an unknown onject flew into her eye which caused a scratch in her cornea. After her treatment, she returned back to the city the same month to continue filming.^[17]
In June 2016, while shooting a live concert sequence, Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli got into a major fight due to creative differences which resulted in the shooting getting stalled for nearly an hour. The incident took place at the Gateway of India in Mumbai where the film was being wrapped with a song shoot. Farhan Akhtar – who at first was oblivious to the upheaval situation – when heard about the incident met the two men in their respective vanity vans and was able to calm them down. The shoot then resumed thereafter and went on smoothly with all three actors returning to the stage."^[18] Shooting for the "I Know What You Mean" scene took place in Madh Island in Mumbai.^[19] However, Saudagar rebuffed these allegations saying that such incident never took place.^[20]
The film had to undergo ten days of reshoots just two weeks before its premiere, making it a rare occurrence in Bollywood. According to an undisclosed source by the Deccan Chronicle, this was done in order to enhance the film.^[21] Such claim was also nevertheless dismissed by Saudagar but said that there some delays in shooting due to rain in Shillong.^[20] Pre-production took place for 70 days while filming lasted for a total of 66 days,^[22] ending in June 17, 2016.^[23]

Production

Development

On June 20, 2011, Paramount Pictures announced that Warren Beatty would write, direct and star in an upcoming untitled film, his first directorial effort since 1998's Bulworth and his first acting role since 2001's Town & Country.^[6] Beatty had been working on a biopic based on Howard Hughes' life for more than 40 years, after seeing him in a hotel lobby in the early 1970s and being fascinated by him.^[7][8] The screenplay was written by Beatty, based on a story by himself and two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter Bo Goldman.^[9] On September 16, 2011, Paramount dropped the project and New Regency Pictures picked it up.^[10] The film then stayed in the development stages for almost three years.^[11] On February 24, 2014, it was reported that New Regency and RatPac Entertainment were producing and financing the film,^[12] with a $26.7 million budget.^[2]

Casting

On June 22, 2011, it was announced that Beatty was looking for an ensemble cast for the film, with him playing the role of Howard Hughes. He met with actors Andrew Garfield, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Shia LaBeouf, Jack Nicholson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Rooney Mara to co-star.^[13] On November 14, 2011, Felicity Jones was added to the cast of the film to play the female lead,^[14] but later dropped out of the role due to production delays.^[15] Justin Timberlake and Alden Ehrenreich were up for male lead, while Bening, Nicholson, Baldwin, and Owen Wilson were rumored for other roles.^[16] Almost three years later, on February 24, 2014, it was announced that Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Matthew Broderick, and Bening had been cast in the film; Collins portraying a young actress named Marla Mabrey, and Ehrenreich her driver and love interest Frank Forbes.^[12] On February 27, 2014, it was reported that Candice Bergen had joined the ensemble cast, portraying Hughes' secretary Nadine Henly.^[17] On March 6, 2014, Martin Sheen was cast in an unknown role.^[18] Taissa Farmiga later joined the cast in a supporting role.^[19] In April 2014, Brooklyn Decker revealed that Beatty had asked her to improvise on the film, but she had no idea if her scenes would make the final cut.^[20] On May 9, 2014, Alec Baldwin joined the cast of the film, portraying Robert Maheu, the reclusive billionaire's lawyer.^[21]
In March 2015, The New York Times reported that Dabney Coleman would co-star in an unspecified role.^[22] In February 2016, Steve Coogan's casting in the film was reported.^[23] That same month, Farmiga revealed in an interview that Ed Harris and Amy Madigan would be portraying her character's parents.^[24] In April 2016, the casting of Josh Casaubon was reported.^[25]

Filming

Principal photography for the film began on February 24, 2014, in Los Angeles, California.^[26][27] Studio production took place at the Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood.^[22] On location filming took place at multiple locations, including S. Grand Avenue, Musso & Frank Grill, and the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.^[28][29][30] It was reported that production had completed on June 8, 2014 after 74 filming days.^[31] Additional filming took place in late February 2015.^[22]

Release

The first production still from the film, featuring Collins and Bening, was released by Elle in October 2014.^[32] Images of Collins, Ehrenreich, and Beatty were released on May 18, 2016.^[33][34] In August 2016, Entertainment Weekly released another image from the film featuring Ehrenreich and Beatty.^[35] In April 2016, it was announced that 20th Century Fox would distribute the film with New Regency Pictures, with a planned fall 2016 release.^[36]
It had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 10, 2016.^[37] The film was scheduled to be released on November 11, 2016,^[38] but was pushed back to November 23.^[39]

Movie Street V.3 # 190

Tom Cruise is back with his new action thriller "Never Go Back". This time he collaborates with the brilliant director Edward Zwick and the gorgeous Cobie Smulders and trailer also gave some high expectations.

Jack Reacher after disbanding a human trafficking operation and he goes back to the headquarters to meet his long time telephone friend Major Susan Turner. But unfortunately she was framed and jailed. Reacher and Susan Turner teams ups to solve the mystery.

Tom Cruise shines all the way. His screen presence was totally impressive and his action performances were top notch. His energy level is Cobie Smulders was equally impressive as Tom Cruise. But all the other characters were actually dull and was nothing.

The storyline was an okay-ish but clichéd in most parts. It was predictable and the narration was pretty weak and slow. Some of the action scenes and car chase was good.

A forgettable Sequel to the great action movie Jack Reacher.

An action thriller which lacks thrills

Minister Fatakeshto is a Bengali film starring Mithun Chakraborty and Koyel Mullick. It is the sequel to MLA Fatakeshto, and the second installment of Fatakeshto

plot 

The film continues after the events of MLA Fatakeshto. MLA turned Home Minister, Fatakeshto, (Mithun Chakraborty) calls for discipline and pro-people attitude although has few co-ministers are against him. With his usual dialogue " Marbo ekaney , Lash podbe soshane"(shall hit you here, but your body will fall at crematorium) bashes the goons right, left and middle. With his lady reporter reporting everything in "Star Ananda" a TV channel run by The Telegraph .
However, the Chief Minister(Soumitra Chatterjee) is in favor of Fatakeshto . With 4000 Cores loss in Finance Department, Mithun vows to take Finance Ministry and recover the loss in seven days time. The Chief Minister also bestows duty to Mithun removing the FM(one of the goons). With lot many hurdles on the way Mithun recovers almost Rs. 3700 Cores loss by booking ministers for their misappropriation of funds but is left out with 300 Cores balance.
In the meantime the arch villain calls all his group and plans to finish Fatakeshto. Further he also calls for 48 Hours strike ("Bangla Bandh") which Mithun stops with his muscles. The villain then mixes dangerous germs in mineral water bottles which kills around 50 children in Bengal. This forces Mithun to bow down in front of the villain and request for life saving medicine lying with him to save the suffering children. With someone reporting about the mineral water mischief, Mithun gets the arch villain arrested for the crime soon.
In the final showdown, the left out 300 Croes is being collected through public donations dropped in big mud hundies(Lakshmi Badh). The villain comes out of jail on bail and loots the booty and takes it to an unknown destination to make Mithun responsible for the theft. One of the ministers who was with the villain somehow changes mind and informs Fatakeshto(Mithun) the location where the booty is hidden at. CM requests Mithun to go back to his role of GOONDAGARDI to recover people's money. Finally Mithun jumps into the den of the villain and fights around 200 to 300 karate masters. He finally kills the villain and captures the booty. The lost money is returned to Chief Minister.

Bindaas is a 2014 Indian action romantic Bengali film directed by Rajiv Kumar Biswas. It's a Shree Venkatesh Films production in association with Jalsha Movies Production

Plot 

The movie begins with Abhi (Dev) practicing guitar when a girl runs to him and asks him to save her from a gang of goons chasing her. Then Abhi, without fighting, resolves the conflict. The girl introduces herself as Kajol (Sayantika Banerjee). They slowly become friends. But one day she asks Abhi to leave her and go as she cannot stand the separation from him if their relationship develops any further. He then goes back to India and changes the mind of Kajol's brother and when they give a vacation he goes with him to his village. There, where everyone are conservative in nature, he changes their nature and makes them more lovable.
When Kajol expresses her love for him, he tells his flashback. It is then revealed that he was born to their rival's family. His father (Chiranjeet Chakraborty) wanted to convert the people of his village. But his mother didn't want to stay there, so she left him. Later when Abhi goes there, he falls in love with Anjali (Srabanti Chatterjee).
He starts taking revenge on the Kajol's family without revealing his identity. Then they decide to marry Abhi with Anjali because they both are in love with each other. During the marriage the inspector tells his father that the enmity is rekindling because his son is taking revenge on the rivals. Soon afterwards, the rivals come and start killing everyone. After the fight, Abhi's mother dies. His father banishes him and blames her death on him. The story is now back to the present. Kajol's uncle challenges Abhi that if he can defeat his men then he too would follow non violence. After successfully defeating them, her uncle asks Abhi that if he could defeat the rival's son (not knowing that it was Abhi himself) he would marry Kajol to Abhi.
Abhi gets angry at his stubbornness and reveals his true identity. He starts fighting with Kajol's uncle. Then all her family members come and convert him too. This was watched by his father who had just arrived there. His father welcomes him back to the family. The film ends with him reuniting with Anjali.

While his life improves after he buys the bike as he lands a job soon after, trouble starts soon after, when his bike gets stolen. He starts getting in to an altercation with Imran, the younger brother of Akram, the local don, who is extremely hot headed than his elder brother. However the elder brother never harms elderly people or people other than target and only targets people like him. How Joy manages to keep up his rivalry with Imran and yet come out unscathed till the end and retrieves his bike is what the story is all about.

The production was officially announced by Jaaz Multimedia in January 2016, and Zakir Hossain Simanto and Joydip Mukherjee was hired as directors. The film is produced by Abdul Aziz, his production Jaaz Multimedia funded approximately 70% of the film's budget while Eskay Movies funded the rest. A few percent of the film and songs were shot in London, UK. The film was released in Bangladesh on 7 July 2016.^[9] Shikari is currently the highest-grossing film in the history of Bangladeshi Cinema.The film is currently the 2nd highest grossing film in the history of Tollywood

Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven is about as brazen as the cowboys it portrays. It is loud, visceral and action packed but lacks the necessary functions for it to be a truly great film. Despite Fuqua's most confident directing and Denzel Washington's excellent performance, the film ends up being as cluttered as the cast would suggest. When it all comes down to it, it is a matter of an overload of star power. While there have been films in the past that have had incredible casts and flourished, this film makes it feel as though the film is only big enough for one star. Chris Pratt is great as an alcoholic and incredibly ballsy gunslinger, Faraday, but he lacks any gusto to really command the screen as does most of the cast outside of Denzel Washington (someone who I can't say enough good things about here). It ends up feeling like these roles could have been played by anyone when it should have felt like these actor's owned these roles so much so that you can't imagine anyone else in it. Unfortunately that isn't the case here. Quite frankly, the only performances worth noting are Washington and Peter Sarsgaard, who gives a devilishly good performance as a sadistic law man. In this respect, the film is very much a disappointment for anyone expecting to see the next great ensemble film of the year. More importantly, those of you who were excited to see the re-teaming of the Training Day squad (Washington, Hawke and Fuqua) will have to wait a bit longer for that because there is barely any chemistry between Ethan Hawke's Goodnight Robicheaux and Washington's Chisolm. The screenplay, written by True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto and action aficionado, Richard Wenk is lackluster to say the least. As I said, the character development with the characters is either not there or so forced and unnatural that it takes you out of it. After the abysmal season 2 of True Detective and this, I think is safe to say that Pizzolatto is turning into the one hit wonder that everyone feared that he would be. However, I will still hold off on officially saying that about him because there are some ideas that were introduced in the film that were really interesting which is why it is all the more frustrating when they are cast aside and never touched upon again. The screenplay is the big problem here. It is well paced but emotionally hollow. It never really reaches anywhere near the heights of the Kurosawa masterpiece or even the 1957 remake that that film spawned. In this case, the script reads and sounds like a bad imitation. Despite this, The Magnificent Seven does boasts some pretty exceptional action set pieces much to Fuqua's credit. The film is explosive but it is highly predictable. Those who are killed don't really resonate with the viewer because quite honestly, we don't care about any of the characters outside of Washington. They are mere footnotes to the larger picture which is a monumental disappointment. Overall, I thought that Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven boasted a great idea and never truly capitalized on it. The film felt like it really could have been something but we are left holding on to the idea of what could have been.
